The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize

Work by the nominees for 2010's Deutsche Börse is on display at The Photographer's Gallery until April 17. Donovan Wylie's pictures of The Maze are shockingly bleak and probably deserve to win, but the truth is none of the four entrants' work excites me as much as Esko Männikkö's tender images of Finnish households did, an eccentrically framed and tightly hung collection which won him the prize in 2008. With their intense, saturated colours, detached, sociological eye and fascinatingly unfamiliar subject matter, they attained somehow the quality of oil paintings.
