The bee's knees

The warm weather has tempted the trees into flower, and on Tooting Common a honey bee was loading up with nectar, his little panniers full to bursting and his body dusted golden:

Two recent scientific reports suggest a strong link between common pesticides (neonicotinoids) and the decline of honey bee and bumblebee populations worldwide. Why it should surprise anyone that insecticides harm insects is beyond me; neither should it be a shock that the big chemical companies are rushing to disprove these results. Yet I still find it staggering that people will put individual profit before the life of the planet. Because without bees – not to put to fine a point on it – we're f****d.
