This week in wildlife

We have had a sparrowhawk in the garden again, a big male, almost muscular-looking under its painted feathers. It tried to take a woodpigeon from the lawn, but the pigeon somehow sidestepped it before flapping heavily off in surprise and alarm. The hawk was ungainly on the lawn, stepping with wings out for balance; it flew up to the ceanothus and tried to regain its dignity there, but the bush wouldn't take its weight. Eventually it settled on the fence where it sat, hunched and glaring, for ten minutes. Later in the day we heard a lot of corvid alarums from two gardens away; I couldn't see what the fuss was about, but I feel fairly sure I know.
